Friends of Douthat State Park (SPEED)

Friends of Douthat State Park is a non-profit organization that assists the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Douthat State Park by:

Supporting the park with fundraising efforts to enhance government funding and help fund park projects and facilities. Partner with other like-minded organizations and private companies who champion parks and conservation efforts

Advocating and representing the state park at the local and state levels, Promoting the park's natural beauty, advocating for healthy outdoor recreation, and encouraging youth involvement in parks. 

Volunteering by building and maintaining trails, managing beautification projects, helping at staff visitor centers, helping at festivals, workshops, and other park events, planting and maintaining native gardens at Douthat State Park.

Educating the public on the environmental aspects of the park, hosting interpretive events, and working on educational outreach programs. 

Accomplishments and Activities:

• Funded the purchase of an ATV for the search and rescue operations at the park. 
• Supports funds for Kids Fishing Day at Douthat.
• Funded the addition of the outside deck at the Lakeview Store and Gift shop at Douthat. 
• Douthat Lake Run Car Show Fundraiser.
• Douthat Campsite Cook Off Oktoberfest fundraiser
• Funded the purchase of digital educational displays in the main office.
• Obtained grant for funding to purchase dark sky approved lighting throughout the park. 
• Funded the installment of the pollinator garden.
